Alluvium

Material deposited by flowing flood waters or rivers, typically sand, clay, silt and which produces fertile soil.

e.g. Alluvium left by the flood has produced dark, rich soil.

Alphanumeric

Consisting of both letters and numbers (or numerals).

e.g. The laptop had the standard alphanumeric keyboard.

Axiom

A standard, accepted or evidently-true statement.

e.g. We have all heard the axiom that bookmakers make money.

Autonomous

The freedom to act independently. Self governing.

e.g. The board of governors must remain autonomous.

Attrition

The reduction in strength or effectiveness through sustained attack or pressure.

e.g. During the war their armies sustained years of attrition.
