26 Aug The Grammar-phone … a loud noise from the proof-reader!
An easy way to remember how to use ITS and IT’S
Say this out loud three times …
ONLY use the apostrophe when using a contraction.
ONLY use the apostrophe when using a contraction.
ONLY use the apostrophe when using a contraction.
A contraction is a shortening of a word or two words (just like an elastic band that expands then it contracts and goes shorter).
IT HAS >>> IT’S e.g. It’s been a nice day
IT IS >>> IT’S e.g. It’s my turn
This is the only time you use the apostrophe. No contraction, no apostrophe!
In every other instance, use ITS, even when it sounds like a possessive.
e.g. Every dog has its day.
e.g. The car had its lights broken
