Crafty, cream of the crop copy

In an average day Digital Marketing magazine states that consumers are exposed to more than 3,500 advertising messages (read more here).

Therefore, with competition so fierce for customers’ attention, digital marketing and social media marketing businesses are fighting it out in a highly populated and constantly evolving industry. The human attention span now sits at a mere eight seconds, therefore creating an eye catching and effective piece of copy, that will stand out from competitors is essential. There are copious ideas and suggestions available on how to achieve this, however in this blog I want to discuss one particularly useful language tool that helps to draw in and engage your consumers.

It’s the awesome…. alliteration!

Oxford dictionary defines alliteration as, ‘the occurrence of the same sound at the start of adjacent words.’

So many of the world’s best known companies, figures and works of literature use alliterations, think Dunkin’ Donuts, Coca-Cola, Mickey Mouse. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet we hear ‘From forth the fatal lions of these two foes…’ the use of alliteration from these infamous figures hasn’t done them any harm!

Think of the well known tongue twisters; ‘She sells sea shells on the sea shore…’, ‘Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,’ these are so distinctive and grab your attention immediately meaning you remember them and then struggle to fight the urge to repeat them out loud!

Using alliteration here and there in your copy will grab readers’ attention and make you stand out from the crowd. It emphasises meaning and expression and creates subtle imagery that will draw consumers to your product or service.

Engaging this excellent tool is easy, just think about what you are trying to portray with your copy and what images and emotions you want to create and conjure up in your customers. Then whack out your thesaurus and find your inner Shakespeare!
