Idiom
An expression which can not be understood directly from the usual meanings of its constituent words, but which is accepted as having a definite meaning. A set phrase or saying.
e.g. Kick the bucket. Barking up the wrong tree.
Diatribe
An abusive, forceful and bitter verbal attack or criticism against someone or something.
e.g. She unleashed a diatribe on the use of the drug.
Conjecture
An opinion or conclusion formed on the basis of incomplete information. A theory without proof.
e.g. The value of using the new equipment is purely conjecture.
Vernacular
The everyday language or dialect spoken by the people of a country or region. Native speech or use of phrases.
e.g. He wrote in the vernacular to reach his target audience.
Eloquent
To speak or write in a clear, fluent, expressive and persuasive manner.
e.g. The President made an eloquent plea for peace.
